Newcomers need a SIN in Canada. The nine-digit SIN is private and unique.
For income tax and benefit identification, the CRA uses your SIN. Tax preparers require your SIN for T4s.
You must apply for a Service Canada SIN to become a permanent resident of Canada and hold a temporary SIN (starting with 9) from the CRA or Service Canada. After acquiring this new SIN, TTN, or ITN, do not use another.
Upload your documents securely to apply for a SIN online. Apply in person or by mail at a Service Canada Centre. Find out more at Service Canada or 1-866-274-6627.
